Site Update January 3, 2017

The site was just updated with what are hopefully some performance improvements. Basically the database table used to store all the finds currently contains more than 20 million entries and there was contention accessing the table. I gave the queries reading from the table a hint for better performance and I added an index into the table for improving some of the queries. I also rebuilt all the indexes on that table and a few other tables that had become quite fragmented over time. I'm sure what I wrote doesn't mean much for most of you, but hopefully it will mean the site will perform better for you.
Enjoy,
Russell

I just pushed out another update. Some of you may have noticed that the statistics haven't been updated since before the Jan. 3 update. Basically, the index I added was being utilized adversely when some of the statistics were being updated. I have changed things so that index will not be used when updating the statistics. I think this will fix the problem. I'll find out tomorrow when I get up, it's well past my bed time now.

I just pushed out another update with similar changes for performance. The original changes for this update cleaned things up a lot and now I am able to identify other performance issues and clean them up. It's a lot easier to spot other issues when the noisy stuff is silenced. I did add a couple more indexes, this time on the Geocache table. They should improve performance when listing top finds and also when listing someone's first day finds.
I also moved freezing last years top cachers to the 15th from the 10th. For some reason, not all the caches in Idaho have been added to LonelyCache. There are still about 450 caches left. They seem to be trickling in, but I'm not sure why they haven't all been added yet. I am seeing a problem with the Geocaching.com Live API that Groundspeak is looking into. I suspect that may be affecting this but don't really know if that's the case or not. At any rate, the annual leader boards will be frozen on the 15th whether or not all Idaho caches are included.
