Tying LonelyCache to Your Geocaching.com Membership

Post by Corfman Clan »

Since the LCP will be making use of the Geocaching.com Live API, Redfist and I want to take advantage of that to offer more than just a statistics website to you. We have been thinking of various things we can have the website do that takes advantage of your Geocaching.com membership. Here are a few things that we think would be nice to have:
  • Implement something like the "DGP Most Wanted" and add the capability to add the selected caches to one of your bookmark lists
  • Heck, just the ability to add any cache you want in the LCP to a bookmark list.
  • Add a personal cache note to a cache that includes that cache's point score. For example: "38 LonelyCache points (30 after next find) as of 4/7/12"
We also plan to make use of your account to give you:
  • The ability to update any cache you feel needs updating (like the DGP synch function).
  • The ability to update all caches you have found from a certain date.
  • The ability to add a cache to the LCP.
These three would be done in real time and would most likely include updating the cache's points. Updating the Leaderboards would most likely not be done at this time just to keep all leaderboard values consistent. Depending on the number of finds for the middle item, it may be done in the background.

I must emphasize that in order for the website to do any of the above, you will need to authorize it to have access to your Geocaching.com account on your behalf. Any access to Geocaching.com through your account would be done at your direction through your use of the website.

We welcome your thoughts on this and also any ideas you might have.

I understand these ideas and they sound awesome! But, I am always leery to give my password to anyone. I'd have to think about this for a while.

You would not be giving your password to anyone. You would be redirected to Geocaching.com where you would then authorize LonelyCache.com to use your account on your behalf. There is some handshaking going on between Geocaching.com and LonelyCache.com during the authorization process that allows all this to happen. Once you have authorized LonelyCache.com to access your account, you can always revoke that authorization any time you want. If you are using any application using the Geocaching.com Live API, such as GSAK, Certitude, CacheSense, NeonGeo, etc, you have already done this. To see/manage your current authorizations you would use the Geocaching.com authorization page. I should also mention that what LonelyCache.com or any other application, is allowed to do with your authorization through the API is bound by agreement with Groundspeak.

Makes sense to me. The geocaching.com functions in GSAK are very useful. I see these options as another plus. Thumbs up from me.

I agree with ZenGuru. I make use of some of those GSAK functions too and see no difference here. I see no down side to it.

Yes, Yes. The GSAK connection makes it much easier.
