Expanding LonelyCache into more of California

Post by Corfman Clan »

I have just updated LonelyCache to make it easier to add counties. To start, all 58 California Counties have been added and to LonelyCache. However, only twenty-five have been activated. Over the next week, caches within these 25 counties will be added to LonelyCache.

I have basically selected counties outside of the major metropolitan areas. Depending on how things go, I may add more counties or remove some.

[Edited to show the additionally added counties]

All of California, including its 58 counties have been added to LonelyCache.

The 58 counties are:
  • Alameda
  • Alpine
  • Amador
  • Butte
  • Calaveras
  • Colusa

I just activated three more California counties: Colusa, Glenn, and Sutter. They should be fully populated in about a week.

I decided to go ahead and activate four more counties: Fresno, Kern, Kings, and Tulare. Wait a week and everything should be populated. This makes 44 of California's 58 counties. The 14 remaining counties are south of the bay and along the coast. At this time, I am not planning on activating them.

After no plans to continue expanding into California, I just activated eight more counties. Only the six coastal counties in southern California remain. The eight activated counties are: Alameda, Contra Costa, Monterey, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz.

I decided to activate the remaining six California counties. They are Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura. This means that all of California is now a part of LonelyCache. As usual, it will take about a week to populate these into LonelyCache.

The regions are a holdover from The Deep Southwest Geocaching Project (DGP). Currently, LonelyCache has all the regions from the DGP except for the region in Mexico. You could say the same (all the counties but no regions) for all the other states LonelyCache has expanded into over the years. Personally, I have little desire nor inclination to create more regions into areas LonelyCache has expanded to. Some of that is because I don't have the local knowledge on how to break up those areas into meaningful regions. I suppose if someone would like to propose some new regions, we could entertain that. Thanks for asking.

Personally I think it is wise to not include regions in the new states and I would even say do away with the regions that are a carry over from the old site. They are pretty much arbitrary lines that don't really mean much. I love that you have the county stats and state stats and LC wide stats. Most the time I just scroll past all the regions to get to the county stats. Just my 2 cents. If the regions calculations use processing ability, then drop them, free up that calculating potential to add more states. I would love to see LC expand more! :D
