Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!

Post by rocketsciguy »

Here's another fun idea for confetti sprinkles on the cake -- while the wheat for the flour is still being sown. ;) And maybe this suggestion better fits in the "Leader Boards" discussion.

I notice a lot of cachers put stats badges on their profiles, like the gc.com Finds/Hides image or the drunners.de rankings badge (State/US or State/World, etc.). When LCP enters live operation, it might be fun to have an LCP stats badge with the cacher's handle, an overall CP (or whatever) total, and some rankings. Maybe users can customize which rankings they care to include on their badge, or by default include the n most noteworthy rankings, e.g. "#8 (Tie) [Multi-Cache Icon] Finder in Sedgwick CO" or "#58 [CITO Event Icon] Host in Nevada", et cetera ad nauseum.

...For some cachers, it may be necessary to limit the number of rankings to include so as to not produce a 2000 x 200 pixel badge.

I take it your talking about BadgeGen. I'm not much of a follower of BadgeGen. If this is something that is completely tied into and run by the website then I might follow the this sites version of it.

I hadn't actually heard of that one before. I was thinking more like this:
http://www.drunners.de/cachestats/registration_eng.php
Image
where your ranking is based on the total number of smilies within two geographic areas (in this case Germany and Europe).

or the Groundspeak-provided:
Image
Except instead of Finds and Hides, we might have current CP score, and a couple top rankings of note. My examples previously are a bit trivial and tongue-in-cheek, but could be your top rankings by geographic subdivision. Maybe something like 12,345 CPs / #2 Salt Lake Co UT / #8 Utah / #15 LCP.

I actually don't care too much for the "Silver Earthcache" or "3-Star Canadian Provinces" style recognition badges. I know many people do, but DGP and this is site are more about the dynamic competitive rankings not the milestone achievements. Your blue ribbon for best Whereigo finder could change next week based on somebody else's actions, so the stats badge would have to be hosted at this site and updated along with the stats.

Some sort of badge would be very nice, just like having the link to put on cache web pages.

I think this is a great suggestion. I first thought of the BadgeGen stuff and then I thought of a strip like the Groundspeak supplied one. Either way, I think this sort of sugar would be popular.

Would this be something that could be integrated into the site and then have a link that could be put into our profile page? If so I'm all for it.

Yes, it would be something like http://www.geocaching.com/my/statbar.aspx on geocaching.com. Or even http://dgpstats.com/htmlgenerator on DGP

I finally got around to investigating this a bit. I was worried about how to dynamically create the image on the fly. It appears that won't be much of a problem. So, once we have a logo and some leaderboards, etc, it should be a fairly simple task to create some of these for your use.

Cool beans! I know you can do it with PHP too (I think you need a library), so I was hoping it wasn't too difficult. Glad to hear it should be available not long after the leaderboards are up. As for logo and graphics... not my strongest area, but I'll try to give it some thought.

I noticed there used to be a link you could add on your cache pages that referred by to DGP. Here's an example:

Are you planning on providing a code like this that we can add to our cache pages? I thought it was a good way to provide promotion for DGP. As a matter of fact, clicking through one of these led me to investigate DGP. I am sure it would promote LCP the same way.
