Old DGP Regions

Post by 3rd times the charm »

Lonely Cache Project has been live for 2 months now and all seems to be going great!! :D I appreciate all the work that has been do to this site. 8-) Just wish the old DGP regions of California (Salton Sea, Mojave and Death Valley) would be added to the site. :(

And then there is the Trans-Pecos region of Texas and Old Mexico. :(

Unfortunately, the way LonelyCache includes caches will need to be revamped in order to add those regions. I hope to get to it someday, but it will be a long while before that happens. Right now I have several other work items that are higher on the to do list. Also, that change will be fairly involved so I'm sort of avoiding it for simpler, less risky updates. Sorry.

I've just been wondering about the possible inclusion of caches in Southern NM which are currently showing up as Trans-Pecos, but which are decidedly in NM -- could these be added to the Mogollon region? These appear to be GC44278, GC4427B, GC4KV1V, and GC440RR

I have set the region for the first three caches to be in the Mogollon region. I didn't change the fourth, GC440RR though since it appears it really is in Texas, not New Mexico. If that is the case, the cache owner really ought to change the state to Texas. Let me know if it really is in New Mexico.

Regarding DGP regions. The old DGP site is apparently is gone forever, I've been getting a debug message every time I try to access it. Are there presently any online maps of the regions? The old ones were not the best for details but they were something.

I don't know of any other online maps of the DGP regions. I haven't looked too hard, but I don't know what mapping software would be good for creating some. Google maps and Bing maps really aren't appropriate for creating an image to display.

Thanks for fixing the Mogollon caches.

I am also interested in the maps issue -- indeed, I just updated my GC profile for February, and reinserted my LCP stat under the DGP maps. Hopefully AZTech is hosting his FindStatsGen plug-in/DGP map files somewhere. :?: I have the originals, but it would be cool to extend them so that Wyoming (good addition) gets included. Whole 'nother discussion: One or several regions for WY?

FWIW, GSAK has the old DGP maps/definition files for use with FindStatsGen. If you want to use them, crank up FindStatsGen and
- Click on Options
- Right side, click on the Maps button
- Click on Install Map Data Files from GSAK
- select the DGP maps you want and click Install
- Back at the list, select the DGP map(s) you installed (serially), and edit them so that your DGP/LCP region field is selected.

I haven't examined the structure of the map data files, but I suspect that they are essentially coordinate set-defined route files; joined segments. Sadly, I don't have any program(s) to render those data  but I'll bet something like ArcGIS would do it in a heartbeat...
