Live Updating

How does the Live update work?

I have noticed that sometimes my recent finds will update from Live and with in a few minutes of logging on to LPC. Other times my recent finds take a day or more to update even though I log in to LPC several times in the same time frame. Not a big deal just wondering how and when LPC uses Live.

Everytime you log in, or start a new session (haven't been active on LonelyCache for a half hour or so), your recent finds should be added to LonelyCache. The only time this normally doesn't happen is when the site statistics are being updated (usually from 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM Eastern time).

Now, the site update has been running wonky lately, so if this is a recent occurrence that's probably why. For example, today's update didn't complete until close to 6:00 PM Eastern time. That's a 14 hour window where the live update would not have occurred. Yesterday the update hadn't completed by midnight AZ time, so I cancelled it. So basically, all of yesterday the live update would not have occurred. Last Friday was about the same as today.

I logged cache GC3C444 on Oct. 16. It still doesn't show in my recent finds. It does show as a cache in LCP but shows that it is still unfound. Any idea what the problem is? Cache is in Nevada.

Looks like it showed up not long after you posted. Nice FTF!

There are two main mechanisms for Finds to get populated into LCP.

First, a weekly Pocket Query that grabs caches that have been recently found in a geographic pattern that Corfman Clan set up to be sure the entire five-state LCP area gets checked once every 7 days. Generally, that means that cache Finds make their way into LCP within 7 days after being logged online. Note, that is not the same thing as 7 days from the date they were found -- late logs may be populated late.

Second, if you have registered on the main site and linked your GC.com account to use the Live API, whenever you visit the main site LCP will check whether you have any recent finds, compares them against its database, and if there are new ones it will download recent logs for those caches (to include other Finds on the same cache that have happened recently, e.g. on a fresh FTF). The process is not instantaneous, so if you log in, go to your recent finds and don't see the ones you expect there, wait a few seconds or a minute and refresh the page -- they will show up. Stats and leaderboards are not automatically updated when the Live API runs, however.

There's a third process that's an annual refresh of every cache in the system that's intended to be sure any logs that were missed get incorporated and to remove deleted logs. There is not currently a way to manually instruct LCP to get recent logs or to refresh a specific cache upon request (the admins can do that, but not users).

Hopefully all that is correct, and if not I'm sure Corfman Clan will let us know. :D
