Moving Caches

Post by Corfman Clan »

I am working on updating LonelyCache to exclude moving caches. I've made the code updates and need to verify them before actually updating the site. Moving caches are problematic, especially when they move in and out of the LonelyCache territory. The problems really arise when the moving cache's state is one of the state's in the LonelyCache territory but it's coordinates are outside its home state.

Currently, I'm aware of the following moving caches in LonelyCache:

Code: Select all

GC46AA Photograph Arizona GCB0B
GC5416 FrontRange Moving Target rschoolf
GC55D9 Pikes Peak Traveler Gil&Ani
GCA87C Jacob's MOVING Cache #1 JacobBarlow
GCB598 Jacob's MOVING Cache #2 JacobBarlow
GCBBD3 g.V.A.R?T. Moving Cache 26 Fe
GCCCB4 g.SL.R?T. Moving Cache JeeperDad
GCD07A Ut.V.R?T. Moving Cache JeeperDad
GCD34D The Ornament (moving) JeeperDad
As far as I can tell, all but JacobBarlow's caches should stay in their home state. So the question is, should we exclude all moving caches, or just those that are allowed to move from state to state? I'm inclined to exclude all moving caches as opposed to making exceptions for some. Your thoughts on this are encouraged. Also, if you know of other moving caches in LonelyCache, please mention them.

I agree. Remove them all.

I also agree, it makes sense to exclude them from the system as their behavior contradicts the geographic assumptions the site is built around. It's not without cause that this kind of cache is no longer allowed, but I admit it's pretty cool to be able to find one these grandfathered gems. If there were to be an exception, I think it could only work if the cache stayed within the same county and region.

I hope that this new incarnation of Jacob's #2 makes its way towards me so I can grab it. A couple years back I found GCDB76 "Jacob's MOVING Cache #3" as it passed through my area -- that would also be a good one to exclude from LonelyCache because when it respawns, it will also likely start in Utah County.

Yes, that is on the exclude list. Above, I only listed caches that are both on the exclude list and in LonelyCache.

Thanks for the comments.
