I like the Wikipedia style request for donations idea. I don't know what kind of success Wikipedia has, but such donations, if successful could generate some income to help defray your costs and make the site sustainable. This is a site I use almost every day so it is important to me to keep it operational. I would be able to double down on my premium $3.00 a month geocaching membership and donate $36 a year to the cause.
Thanks,
Victor

Re: Site Update Jan. 18, 2013
FYI the ads I hardly notice. I would be willing to donate though but come on the ads on this site are not a distraction like I have seen on others.
Other sites I am on they take the ads off for paying members, non paying members see the ads. Those ads ARE obnoxious!
To me if these ads bug you that much then put your money where your mouth is. I for one would be willing to do so and still see the ads if it helps keep the site going.

You could consider adding a PayPal Donate button to the web-pages. For an example go to http://gjhikes.com/ and scroll to the bottom right-hand corner of the page.
